Kathmandu, Aug 31 (V7N) — More than 200 schoolchildren are missing following devastating floods in Nepal, according to the country’s Ministry of Education and Sports, as rescue teams continue operations in the worst-affected areas.
The ministry said at least 19 schools have been damaged across three districts severely affected by the floods. Nine schools were completely destroyed, while seven others suffered partial damage.
Teachers and students have also been reported missing from several schools. According to the latest ministry assessment, more than 200 students remain unaccounted for, while around 20 students are believed to have been swept away by floodwaters.
Rasua and Nuwakot are among the districts suffering the most damage. A total of around 2,425 students were enrolled in schools in the two districts.
Several educational institutions have been severely affected, with some submerged by floodwater and others buried beneath landslides and debris.
One school authority reported that a bus carrying students was swept away by the floodwaters, adding to fears over the fate of those on board.
Rescue and search operations are continuing in the affected areas, while authorities are assessing the extent of damage to schools and attempting to locate the missing students and teachers.
