Niamey, Jan 30 (V7N) — Heavy gunfire and explosions were reported near the main international airport in Niamey, the capital of Niger, early Thursday, prompting a swift military response.
According to the Niger Defense Ministry, at least 20 attackers were killed during a counter-offensive by security forces. Four soldiers were injured, while 11 suspected attackers were arrested in connection with the incident.
The attack took place on Thursday morning (January 29) local time and has been officially described by the government as a terrorist attack.
Meanwhile, Niger’s military leader Abdurrahmane Tianyi accused France, Benin and Ivory Coast of financing terrorist groups involved in the assault. He warned that Niger would take appropriate action in response to what he described as external interference.
No further details were immediately available regarding the identities of the attackers or the extent of damage near the airport area. Security has been tightened in and around Niamey following the incident.
