Stockholm, Oct 06 (V7N) – The 2025 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine has been awarded to American scientists Mary E. Branco and Fred Ramsdale, and Japanese scientist Shimon Sakaguchi for their pioneering discoveries related to the body’s immune regulation process known as “peripheral immune tolerance.”
The announcement was made by the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden, at 3:30 pm local time on Monday, according to Reuters.
The Nobel Prize committee stated that the human immune system, while powerful, must be carefully regulated to prevent it from attacking the body’s own organs. The three laureates’ discoveries have revealed how the immune system maintains this delicate balance, preventing harmful self-reactivity.
Their work has laid the foundation for a new field of immunological research and opened the door to innovative treatments for cancer, autoimmune disorders, and other immune-related diseases.
Each year, the Karolinska Institute awards the Nobel Prize in Medicine, while the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences announces the Nobel Prizes in Physics and Chemistry.
