Dhaka, Sep 26 (V7N)- Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad has called for an end to match-fixing and urged stakeholders to keep sports free from political influence.
He made the remarks on Saturday night at a reception held at Dhaka Club for advisers and patrons of the Mohammedan supporters' group.
The Speaker said the current environment for sports in Bangladesh was not conducive to its development and called for measures to restore a healthy sporting culture.
He also said greater participation and competition in sports could help keep young people away from drug abuse.
At the event, State Minister for Road Transport and Railways Habibur Rashid Habib urged sports clubs across the country to take greater initiatives to involve the younger generation in sporting activities.
Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Administrator Abdus Salam said developing sports clubs was essential to reviving the country's football tradition.
He said football must be brought back to playing fields across Dhaka to achieve meaningful development of the sport.
The speakers emphasized greater youth participation, stronger sports institutions and a healthy environment for the development of football and other sports in Bangladesh.
