SAN FRANCISCO, July 25 (V7N) — Meta has launched a new "Facebook Verified" badge, offering general users a free way to verify their identity via a selfie video check as artificial intelligence makes it increasingly easy to generate fake profiles, images, and deceptive accounts.
Unlike traditional paid verification subscriptions or celebrity badges, this new feature is aimed at everyday users to confirm that a real human operates the account.
To receive the badge, eligible users must record a short video selfie. Meta's system then compares the video with the user's existing profile pictures to verify authenticity, a process designed to complete within minutes.
The feature is currently available to users aged 18 and older whose accounts remain in good standing under Facebook's Community Standards, specifically avoiding histories of scams, fraud, or suspicious inauthentic behavior. However, the free badge is not available for Facebook Pages or profiles in Professional Mode.
Initially rolling out in select international markets, the badge will appear on user profiles, Facebook Marketplace, Groups, and Facebook Dating, with plans to expand its visibility to News Feed posts in future updates.
Meta clarified that while the badge verifies that a real person operates the profile, it does not serve as an endorsement or guarantee of a user's credibility, urging users to maintain caution when sharing personal information or conducting online transactions.
