Barcelona, Nov 04 (V7N)- FC Barcelona delivered a commanding performance to defeat Aston Villa 3-0 in the UEFA Champions League at Camp Nou on Tuesday (November 3), ending the English side's winning run in the competition.
Brazilian forward Raphinha scored twice, while teenage sensation Lamine Yamal added another goal to secure a convincing victory for the five-time European champions.
The win marked an important comeback for Barcelona following their previous defeat against reigning champions Paris Saint-Germain (PSG). It also strengthened their hopes of finishing among the top eight teams in the league phase.
Barcelona took control from the opening minutes, using their aggressive high press to put Aston Villa under considerable pressure. The hosts broke the deadlock in the seventh minute when a misplaced clearance from João Gomes fell to Lamine Yamal, who made no mistake in beating goalkeeper Zion Suzuki.
With that strike, Yamal reportedly reached 14 Champions League goals, surpassing Kylian Mbappé's teenage record of 13 goals. Norwegian striker Erling Haaland remains third on the list with 10 goals scored as a teenager.
Despite falling behind early, Unai Emery's Aston Villa attempted to fight back and created several opportunities during the first half. Matty Cash came close with a powerful effort, while João Gomes also threatened Barcelona's defence. However, the hosts managed to withstand the pressure.
Barcelona goalkeeper García and the defensive line played important roles in preventing Villa from finding an equaliser before the interval.
After the break, Barcelona increased their attacking intensity and doubled their advantage through Raphinha. The Brazilian forward received a well-timed pass from Fermín López, broke through Villa's defence and calmly placed the ball into the bottom corner.
Villa struggled to regain control as Barcelona continued to dominate possession and create opportunities. João Cancelo later delivered an excellent cross with the outside of his right foot, allowing Raphinha to finish from close range and complete his brace.
The goal took Raphinha's tally to 19 across all competitions this season, underlining his growing importance in Barcelona's attacking setup.
Meanwhile, the match was played under a sombre atmosphere as the traditional UEFA Champions League anthem was not played before kick-off as a tribute to Tenerife striker Jesús de Miguel, who died following a cardiac arrest after an on-field collision during a Spanish second-division match.
Following the victory, Raphinha dedicated the result to the supporters but chose to focus on the tragedy rather than celebrate.
Speaking to Spanish broadcaster Movistar, he expressed his condolences to the late footballer's family and wished them strength during the difficult period.
The result was also a disappointing one for Aston Villa manager Unai Emery, whose return to Barcelona brought back memories of his team's historic 6-1 defeat against the Catalan giants in 2017, when he was managing Paris Saint-Germain.
Although Emery's side managed to remain competitive for much of the first half, Barcelona's attacking quality ultimately proved too strong.
With this emphatic victory, Barcelona have sent a strong message to their European rivals as they continue their pursuit of a place in the Champions League's top eight.
