Moscow, May 5 (V7N) - Russian President Vladimir Putin stated on Sunday that Russia possesses the necessary strength and resources to achieve its objectives in the ongoing war in Ukraine, and expressed hope that the use of nuclear weapons would not be required.
In a statement addressing the current state of the conflict, Putin said, “Ukraine tried to provoke us into making a mistake. These weapons (nuclear) have not yet been needed. I hope they will not be.”
Putin emphasized that Russia has sufficient military and strategic capacity to reach its war goals without resorting to its nuclear arsenal. His remarks come amid heightened global concern over the prolonged war and potential escalation.
The Russian president’s comments appear to be aimed at reassuring both domestic and international audiences that, while nuclear weapons remain a part of the country's arsenal, their use is not being actively considered in the current scenario.
Western analysts have been closely watching Russia's rhetoric on nuclear weapons, especially as the conflict with Ukraine continues into its third year, with no immediate end in sight.
