Washington, Aug 01 (V7N) – Despite more than seven decades of diplomatic friendship, India is yet to become a full-fledged ally of the United States in international trade, said US Secretary of State and National Security Adviser Marco Rubio under President Donald Trump.

In an interview with Fox News on Thursday, Rubio addressed concerns about India’s ongoing purchase of discounted Russian oil, which he described as a "source of irritation" for Washington. His remarks came a day after President Trump imposed a 25% export tariff on Indian goods.

"Look, India is our friend, a strategic partner in global trade. But this alliance has not reached 100% yet," Rubio told Fox News. He expressed dissatisfaction over India’s refusal to diversify its fuel sources despite access to other suppliers in the international market.

Rubio criticized India for purchasing large quantities of oil from Russia — a practice that has continued for years, especially after Western sanctions drove down Russian oil prices. He also alleged that India is reselling the discounted oil at higher rates in global markets, further complicating the situation.

India’s high demand for energy — including oil, gas, and coal — is understandable given its size, Rubio acknowledged. However, he argued that India’s reliance on Russian energy, even when alternatives are available, undermines strategic alignment with the United States.

The new 25% export tariff marks a significant policy shift and reflects growing tensions between Washington and New Delhi over energy trade and global strategic interests.
