Toronto, Jun 24 (V7N)- Croatia national football team secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Panama national football team in their Group “L” match at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, keeping their knockout-stage hopes firmly on track.

The 2018 World Cup runners-up were tested throughout the contest by a determined Panama side that produced several dangerous counterattacks and caused problems for the Croatian defense despite ultimately suffering defeat.

After a goalless first half, Croatia found the breakthrough shortly after the restart. Substitute Ante Budimir scored the decisive goal in the 54th minute, calmly finishing a low cross from Josip Stanišić.

Croatia had struggled to break down Panama before halftime, prompting coach Zlatko Dalić to make tactical adjustments during the interval. The changes proved effective as Croatia gained greater control in the second half and eventually secured the winning goal.

The match was also a landmark occasion for Croatian captain Luka Modrić, who made his 200th international appearance. The veteran midfielder became only the fourth men's footballer in history to reach the milestone.

Despite the loss, Panama continued to fight until the final whistle and created several opportunities to equalize. However, Croatian goalkeeper Dominik Livaković produced a series of crucial saves to preserve his team's lead.

The result leaves Croatia in a strong position in Group “L” ahead of their final group-stage match against Ghana national football team in Philadelphia on June 28. Meanwhile, Panama's hopes of advancing have ended after consecutive defeats, and they will conclude their World Cup campaign against England national football team in New Jersey.
