Philadelphia, Jun 23 (V7N)- The FIFA World Cup Group “I” match between France national football team and Iraq national football team was temporarily suspended at halftime due to severe weather conditions and lightning threats.
The match, held at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, USA, was halted at 3 am Bangladesh time on Monday (June 22), immediately after the first half ended. Following the lightning alert, players were instructed to return to the dressing rooms, while spectators were directed to take shelter in safe zones.
Earlier in the day, the match kickoff had already been delayed by approximately 40 minutes due to adverse weather conditions. Organizers initially restricted stadium entry and advised fans to remain outside until conditions improved, before allowing the match to proceed.
At the time of suspension, France was leading 1-0, with captain Kylian Mbappé scoring the opening goal in the 14th minute. France dominated possession and maintained control throughout the first half.
According to United States stadium safety regulations, matches must be stopped immediately if lightning is detected within an 8-mile radius. Play can only resume if no lightning activity is recorded for at least 30 minutes after the last strike.
Officials are currently monitoring weather conditions to determine when the match can safely resume.
