Dallas, Jun 23 (V7N)- Argentina secured a convincing 2-0 victory over Austria in their second group-stage match of the FIFA World Cup, with captain Lionel Messi scoring both goals to seal qualification for the knockout stage with two consecutive wins.
The match took place at Dallas Stadium in the United States at 11 pm Bangladesh time on Monday (June 22). Both teams started competitively, with early chances for Argentina that went unconverted.
Argentina were awarded a penalty in the 8th minute after Lautaro Martínez was brought down inside the box. Following a lengthy VAR review, Messi stepped up to take the spot-kick but failed to convert, missing a rare early opportunity and keeping the match goalless.
Austria also came close to breaking the deadlock, but strong defensive efforts and missed chances kept the score level in the first half. In the 33rd minute, Argentina nearly scored through a chaotic sequence inside the box, but Austria’s defense cleared the danger just in time.
However, Messi eventually broke the deadlock eight minutes before half-time with a clinical finish, giving Argentina a 1-0 lead going into the break.
In the second half, Argentina made several tactical substitutions under coach Lionel Scaloni to maintain control of the game. Despite Austria’s efforts to push forward, Argentina’s defense remained solid.
In stoppage time, Messi struck again to complete his brace, sealing a 2-0 victory for the Albiceleste. Argentina continued to dominate late proceedings but were unable to extend the scoreline further.
With this win, Argentina top their group with six points from two matches, officially securing a place in the knockout stage of the tournament. Their next group match is scheduled against Jordan on Sunday (June 28) at 8 am Bangladesh time.
