Tangail, July 15 (V7N) - A protest rally and demonstration were held on Tuesday afternoon at the Tangail Medical College campus in response to recent derogatory comments made nationwide against the late President Ziaur Rahman and BNP’s acting chairman Tarique Rahman.

The demonstration was organized by the Tangail district branch of the Doctors’ Association of Bangladesh (DAB). It began with a protest march that moved through the medical campus and concluded with a rally within the college grounds.

Presided over by DAB District President Dr. Abdul Matin, the rally was attended by several local leaders, including District BNP President Hasanuzzamil Shaheen, Dr. Rafiqul Islam, District Jubo Dal Joint Convenor Syed Habibul Alam Shatil, Zahid Hossain Mala, and District Chhatra Dal Member Secretary Abdul Baten.

Speakers at the rally strongly condemned what they described as an orchestrated smear campaign against the leadership of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP). They emphasized that the criticisms were part of a broader effort to malign the party and undermine the contributions of Ziaur Rahman and Tarique Rahman, both of whom they described as central figures in Bangladesh’s democratic movement.

Referring to Ziaur Rahman as a national hero and the architect of the anti-autocracy movement, the speakers said that offensive, obscene, and degrading remarks against him were not only unacceptable but an affront to the democratic values of the country. They also accused the current administration of enabling such rhetoric in an effort to suppress political opposition.

Additionally, protesters expressed outrage over the tearing down of banners belonging to DAB and Chhatra Dal on campus. They alleged that the act was carried out with the support of political elements loyal to authoritarian interests within the campus.

The organizers reiterated that such attempts to stifle political expression and tarnish national figures would be met with continued public resistance. No violence was reported during the demonstration.
