Ukhiya, July 16 (V7N) – A tragic road accident claimed the life of a five-year-old Rohingya boy on Tuesday morning inside the Rohingya refugee camp in Ukhiya, Cox’s Bazar. The incident occurred around 11:30 AM near the Camp-in-Charge (CiC) office road at Camp-18, one of the largest camps housing displaced Rohingya populations.
The child has been identified as Azizur Rahman (5), son of Md. Rashid, a resident of Block C-5 in Camp-16.
According to eyewitness accounts, the child was attempting to cross the road when a speeding vehicle struck him. Severely injured, he was immediately taken to the Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) hospital inside the camp, where attending doctors declared him dead upon arrival.
Local authorities, with the assistance of the camp administration, recovered the body and sent it to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital for autopsy. Sub-Inspector Shubho Pal of Ukhiya Police Station confirmed the body’s recovery and transport for postmortem examination.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Ukhiya Police Station, Mohammad Arif Hossain, confirmed the incident and said further investigation is underway to identify the vehicle and determine whether the act was due to reckless driving or negligence within the camp’s transportation system.
The incident has sparked concern among aid agencies and residents regarding the growing traffic risks inside the densely populated refugee camps. Humanitarian workers emphasize the urgent need for stricter traffic management and road safety awareness in and around the camps, especially given the vulnerability of children in such overcrowded environments.
