Dhaka, July 14 (V7N) – BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has said that there can be “no compromise” on the issue of the 1971 Liberation War, warning that there is a deliberate and well-planned effort to undermine and deny the historic struggle for independence.
Speaking at a memorial meeting at the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh, in the capital on Monday to honor the late Gono Forum President and freedom fighter Mostafa Mohsin Montu, Fakhrul said, “Those who did not believe in the independence of Bangladesh during the 1971 war are now raising questions that make one wonder—did we even fight for our Liberation?”
Warning of Conspiracy to Postpone Elections
Mirza Fakhrul also hinted at a conspiracy to derail the upcoming general elections, saying, “A well-thought-out scheme is underway to delay or sabotage the electoral process. However, we remain optimistic and believe the election may still be held by February.”
Reaffirming BNP’s Commitment to Reform
Addressing criticisms that the BNP is against political reform, he clarified, “We are regularly sending our representatives to all commissions. Yet one group continues to label us as anti-reform. This is not only misleading but part of a broader attempt to delegitimize our role in shaping a democratic future.”
Fakhrul recalled the party’s contribution during the 2012 mass uprising, stating, “The achievements of that movement are undeniable, but that doesn’t mean we should abandon the struggle we’ve carried forward for the past 15 years.”
He ended by paying tribute to Mostafa Mohsin Montu, praising him as a principled politician and true patriot who never wavered in his belief in democracy and justice.
The event was attended by leaders from various political parties and civil society members, who echoed the call to protect the legacy of the Liberation War and resist all efforts to distort its history.
