DHAKA, May 31, (V7N) – Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) has surpassed its target for removing sacrificial animal waste and cattle market garbage generated during Eid-ul-Azha, successfully clearing more than 36,000 tonnes of waste within three days after Eid.

DSCC Administrator Md Abdus Salam disclosed the information while addressing a press briefing at Nagar Bhaban today.

He said a total of 36,086 tonnes of waste were transported to the Matuail landfill site over the three-day operation, exceeding the corporation’s initial target of 33,942 tonnes.

According to the DSCC administrator, 13,453 sanitation workers, including DSCC staff and PCSP workers, participated in the large-scale cleanup drive.

To manage the operation, the city corporation deployed 2,117 vehicles, including 382 special-purpose machines and equipment for waste transportation.

Of the total waste removed, 14,814 tonnes were cleared on the first day, 8,977 tonnes on the second day and 12,295 tonnes on the third day.

Abdus Salam said Dhaka normally generates between 3,200 and 3,500 tonnes of waste daily, but the amount rises sharply during Eid-ul-Azha due to sacrificial animal waste.

He described managing the huge volume of waste with limited manpower and resources as a major challenge.

The administrator praised city residents for their cooperation, noting that many people sacrificed animals at designated places and disposed of waste in specified areas, helping speed up the cleanup process.

However, he said full public awareness regarding waste management has not yet been achieved.

He added that 17,315 animals were sacrificed at 357 designated spots under the jurisdiction of DSCC during Eid.

Alongside waste removal, cleanup operations at 11 temporary cattle markets have almost been completed, he said.

Abdus Salam also alleged that some market leaseholders failed to remove waste on time, causing inconvenience to residents.

As a consequence, DSCC has decided to confiscate their security deposits and blacklist the leaseholders responsible for the irregularities.

He further said stricter measures, including increasing security deposit requirements, would be introduced in the future to prevent similar incidents.

Urging residents to remain vigilant, the administrator requested citizens to report any uncollected waste through the designated hotline and assured that authorities would attempt to remove it within one hour.

Expressing regret for temporary inconvenience caused during the Eid period, he thanked city residents for their cooperation and called for continued public support in keeping Dhaka clean.
