Dhaka, Dec 19 (V7N)- The country’s leading newspapers Prothom Alo and The Daily Star were unable to publish their print editions today after their offices were attacked, vandalized, and set on fire late Thursday night.

In a statement posted on its verified social media page on Friday, Prothom Alo authorities expressed regret over the suspension of publication. The statement said that widespread attacks, vandalism, and arson at the newspaper’s office made it impossible to continue normal operations, resulting in the halt of the printed edition.

The newspaper also said its online portal has been temporarily shut down due to damage to technical systems. It apologized to readers and assured that efforts are underway to restore the damaged infrastructure as quickly as possible. The authorities sought readers’ cooperation and patience until normal operations resume.

According to sources, the attacks occurred around midnight following the spread of news about the death of Inqilab Manch spokesperson Sharif Osman bin Hadi. A group of people first attacked the Prothom Alo office and later targeted The Daily Star office.

During the incident, several journalists from both newspapers were trapped inside the building. Members of the army, police, and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) later arrived at the scene, dispersed the attackers, and secured the area. Fire service personnel extinguished the blaze and rescued those trapped inside.

Two firefighters were injured while conducting rescue operations, authorities said.

The incident has raised serious concerns over press freedom and the safety of media professionals in the country.
