Chittagong, Dec 18 (V7N)- A group of protesters attempted to attack the residence of Indian Assistant High Commissioner Dr. Rajiv Ranjan in Chittagong early Thursday, following the death of Inqilab Manch spokesperson Sharif Osman Bin Hadi. The incident led to clashes with police, leaving at least one protester and several police personnel injured.
The incident took place around 1:30 am in the city. According to police, protesters hurled bricks and stones at the residence, prompting law enforcement to intervene.
Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP) Commissioner Hasib Aziz visited the scene and later met with the Indian Assistant High Commissioner. Speaking to reporters, he said the diplomat was present at the residence during the incident.
“The protesters attacked the residence by throwing bricks and stones. Police brought the situation under control by firing tear gas shells and sound grenades,” the CMP commissioner said.
He added that 12 people were arrested during a subsequent raid and will be prosecuted under the Speedy Trial Act.
Commissioner Hasib Aziz further stated that the Indian Assistant High Commissioner expressed satisfaction with the security arrangements following the incident.
Earlier, after news of Sharif Osman Bin Hadi’s death spread, groups of protesters began gathering in front of the residence from around 10:00 pm. The protesters demanded the return of top political leaders, including Awami League President and former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, whom they accused of involvement in Hadi’s death and the July massacre.
Law enforcement agencies have increased security in the area, and the situation is currently under control, police said.
