Chattogram, July 22 (V7N) – A violent confrontation broke out late Monday night in Chawkbazar, Chattogram, following the assault of a youth worker. The clash involved members of Jubo Dal and Islami Chatra Shibir and included attempts to seize an individual from the police station, local authorities report.
According to Islami Chatra Shibir’s northern Chattogram president, Tanzir Hossain Jewel, their activist Ariful Islam was assaulted and handed to the police by Jubo Dal members. Jewel claimed that when Shibir members went to Chawkbazar police station, they were attacked by what he described as “terrorists led by expelled Jubo Dal leader Emdadul Haque Badsha.”
Conflicting accounts emerged from both factions. Sparks flew between the groups as they pursued each other, prompting police to deploy additional forces. Chawkbazar police remained unable to fully regain control by 1:30 AM. Attempts to reach the police station’s officer-in-charge and Emdadul Haque Badsha for comment were unsuccessful.
Jubo Dal Chattogram city leader Rasel described the incident as a reaction to Shibir members claiming one of their own as a victim. He said: “A Chatra League leader was handed to the police by Jubo Dal members, but Shibir members claimed he was their activist and proved it with documents. Jubo Dal workers then surrounded and attacked them. Tensions escalated as leaders from both sides gathered.”
According to the Chawkbazar police, the situation arose after a student was apprehended and brought to the station. “Tensions escalated between Jubo Dal and Shibir over the incident. We are working to calm both sides. Public order is now under control,” a police official stated.
