Ukhiya, July 15 (V7N) – Lieutenant General (Retd.) Md. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, Adviser to the Ministry of Home Affairs, conducted a site visit to Refugee Camp 17 in Ukhiya this afternoon. Arriving at around 3:30 PM, he observed the overall situation from the camp’s observation tower following a thorough tour.
He was accompanied by Adviser to the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief, Faruk-e-Azam, and Lieutenant General (Retd.) Abdul Hafiz, Special Assistant to the Chief Adviser for Defence and National Unity Development.
During the visit, the Home Adviser interacted with law enforcement officials, representatives of the Refugee Relief and Repatriation Commissioner (RRRC), and Camp-In-Charges (CiCs), stressing the importance of continued dialogue to maintain law and order within and around the camps. He said, “We are holding discussions to ensure no criminal activity occurs and no terrorist group gains a foothold.”
In response to a question on landmine explosions near the Myanmar border, he confirmed that preventative measures are being enforced. He also emphasized that stern action will be taken “against any armed or terrorist groups inside or outside the Rohingya camps.”
To protect the local environment and surrounding areas of the Ukhiya and Teknaf camps, he directed authorities to plant over 100,000 trees of various species.
Earlier in the afternoon, the Home Adviser attended a high-level coordination meeting in Cox's Bazar titled ‘Rohingya Camps and District-Level Drug Control’, which began at noon at the Biam Foundation Regional Centre and concluded at 1:45 PM. The meeting focused on three main issues: border security, the Rohingya crisis, and drug trafficking. It was attended by senior officials from the Army, Navy, Air Force, Police, RAB, BGB, Coast Guard, APBN, Ansar, and the Department of Narcotics Control.
Speaking to the press, he stated, “The government is taking strict measures to curtail drug penetration into society. The media also has a vital role in raising public awareness.” He reaffirmed that the government is unwavering in its efforts to address the Rohingya issue.
