Rajshahi, July 18 (V7N) — A busy footpath stretching from Rajshahi College Hindu Hostel to the Museum Crossing has become hazardous due to the disappearance of several drain covers. Beneath the footpath runs a deep drainage system, and recently, during cleaning, the drain covers were removed. Since then, four covers along approximately 220 meters of the footpath have gone missing.

Pedestrians, including many with young children, now face significant safety risks when walking this route. The missing drain covers are aligned parallel to the road and are positioned roughly in the middle of the footpath, increasing the danger for those walking or running, especially children.

Mamun, a student residing in the Rajshahi College Muslim Hostel, said, "Thousands of people use this footpath daily. It is alarming that the drain covers have been missing for over seven days, and yet no action has been taken by the Rajshahi City Corporation."

In response, Rezaul Karim, Chief Executive Officer of Rajshahi City Corporation, expressed concern about the recurring theft of drain covers. He stated that the corporation is seeking information from the public regarding those responsible for the thefts. He also assured that replacement covers would be installed soon. Karim emphasized that despite repeated warnings, the thefts continue, and urged public vigilance to prevent further incidents.

This problem is not limited to the area in front of the Rajshahi College Hindu Hostel; multiple other locations across the city have reported frequent drain cover thefts. Local residents and experts are calling for increased awareness and stronger police patrols to address the issue and ensure pedestrian safety.

The ongoing disappearance of drain covers not only disrupts daily commutes but also poses severe safety threats, particularly to children and elderly pedestrians. Immediate measures are required to prevent accidents and restore the infrastructure’s integrity.
