Gopalganj, July 17 (V7N) – Gopalganj was gripped by fear and silence on Wednesday (July 16) following violent clashes during a road rally organized by the National Citizens Party (NCP). In response to the unrest and loss of lives, the district administration imposed a 22-hour curfew, bringing normal life to a near halt.
The situation deteriorated late Tuesday night amid reports of attacks, arson, vandalism, and intense chases between NCP supporters and government-aligned groups. By Wednesday morning, a state of shock and tension had engulfed the entire district.
Ground reports revealed that most shops and businesses remained closed, while roads were largely deserted except for a few daily wage laborers and those venturing out for emergencies. The district administration used loudspeakers to urge residents to stay indoors.
To maintain law and order, over 1,500 police personnel have been deployed throughout the district. Additionally, four platoons of the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), along with members of the Army, Navy, and Coast Guard, have been stationed in strategic areas to prevent further escalation.
Despite the heavy deployment, police have yet to confirm whether any arrests or legal cases have been filed in connection with the violence.
The exact number of casualties from the clashes has not been officially updated, but the previous day’s confrontations were reportedly fatal, sparking nationwide protests and further polarizing the political landscape.
As the curfew continues, residents remain on edge, uncertain about what the coming hours will bring.
