Dhaka, July 28 (V7N) — A senior officer of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), Deputy Commissioner Tarek Zubair, has been issued a show-cause notice for alleged non-cooperation and contempt of court regarding the custody and court appearance of former Chief Justice A.B.M. Khairul Haque.
According to court sources, Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Md. Shanaullah issued the notice on Sunday. DC Tarek Zubair has been asked to submit a written explanation by July 30 to defend himself against the charges.
The matter stems from events on July 24, when Khairul Haque was arrested in connection with a murder case filed at Jatrabari Police Station. During the subsequent hearing process, DC Tarek Zubair reportedly called Magistrate Md. Shanaullah at 6:20 PM from his personal mobile phone, requesting that the hearing be conducted while the accused remained inside a prison van parked outside the courthouse.
The court order stated that the officer exerted pressure to proceed with the hearing without presenting the accused in the courtroom. However, the magistrate rejected the proposal, citing the need to uphold the integrity and image of the judiciary, and to ensure that proper legal procedure was followed.
The judge further expressed concern that such actions could undermine public confidence in the justice system and set a troubling precedent.
Former Chief Justice Khairul Haque, who served as head of the Supreme Court’s Appellate Division, was arrested amid controversy. His arrest has drawn national attention due to his prominent role in previous constitutional reforms, including the controversial annulment of the caretaker government system during his tenure.
The court’s notice signals growing concern over executive interference in judicial proceedings, particularly in high-profile cases. Legal analysts say the case may test the limits of judicial independence in the current political climate.
