Dhaka, July 24 (V7N) – A low-pressure system is expected to develop in the North Bay of Bengal by Thursday, bringing with it gusty winds, light to moderate rain, and, in some areas, heavy to very heavy rainfall throughout the country. This weather pattern is likely to persist until July 30, with an increase in humidity and slightly higher temperatures expected as the rainy period continues.

Weather Forecast and Impacts:

The Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) has issued a warning regarding the active monsoon system. According to the department’s forecast, the monsoon trough currently extends from Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal, and the northern regions of Bangladesh to Assam, with part of it stretching into the North Bay of Bengal. This alignment of the monsoon winds is resulting in the system being particularly active over Bangladesh, and moderately active in the northern Bay of Bengal.

Meteorologist A. K. M. Nazmul Haque has confirmed that, over the next few days, several regions will experience significant rainfall, particularly accompanied by thunderstorms. These rains are expected in areas of Rangpur, Mymensingh, Dhaka, Chattogram, and Sylhet divisions, with some places in Rajshahi, Khulna, and Barishal divisions also receiving moderate rainfall. The increased likelihood of heavy downpours could lead to localized flooding and disruptions in some parts of the country.

Extended Forecast:

July 24-30: Continuous light to moderate rain with intermittent heavy showers in many regions. Gusty winds are expected, especially along coastal areas.

Increased Humidity: Expect a rise in humidity levels, particularly in urban areas, which may feel uncomfortable during the rain-free intervals.

Temperature Fluctuations: The highest temperature is expected to hover around 35°C in many parts of the country, while the lowest could drop to around 26°C-28°C, bringing some temporary relief from the summer heat.

Rare Fog Sighting in Panchagarh’s Tentulia:

In an unusual meteorological event, the town of Tentulia in Panchagarh witnessed rare foggy conditions during the monsoon season. The fog formed from Tuesday night and persisted into Wednesday morning, leaving the entire area enveloped in a misty atmosphere. Local residents observed that vehicles were turning on headlights while dew collected on crops, a phenomenon often associated with winter months rather than the rainy season.

Jitendranath Roy, the officer-in-charge of the Tentulia Weather Observatory, attributed the fog to the heightened monsoon activity, which has brought increased moisture into the atmosphere, combined with elevated dust levels. Though fog is not uncommon in certain regions, it is unusual to see such fog during the monsoon months, especially given the typically warm and humid conditions of this time of year.

Roy also stated that the fog could be linked to localized atmospheric conditions in the area, as well as the changes in temperature and moisture levels caused by the monsoon winds.

On Wednesday morning, the temperature in Panchagarh recorded a low of 27°C, while the temperature peaked at 35°C by 3 PM, with humidity levels causing discomfort in the region.

Climate Variability and Impacts:

The monsoon system’s variability in Bangladesh has been more noticeable in recent years, with irregular patterns of rainfall, temperature fluctuations, and increased humidity. Experts suggest that these changes could be due to both global climate factors and local atmospheric conditions. The impacts of such weather systems on agriculture, transportation, and public health are often substantial, requiring close monitoring from local authorities.
