Dhaka, June 30 (V7N) — A devastating incident at a hotel near Moghbazar Mor in Dhaka resulted in the deaths of an entire family who had recently returned from Saudi Arabia under mysterious circumstances. On Saturday, Monir Hossain, 48, his wife Nasrin Akter Sapna, 40, and their 18-year-old son Naeem Hossain checked into a hotel for medical care. Monir had brought his ailing son to the capital for treatment and had planned to return to Saudi Arabia after Eid‐ul‐Azha.
They were accompanied by their caretaker, Rafiqul Islam. The family purchased food from a nearby restaurant and ate it in their room that evening. By early Sunday morning, all three had fallen gravely ill and began vomiting. Rafiqul and hotel staff responded by rushing them to Ad-Din Hospital, where Sapna was declared dead on arrival and Monir died soon after being admitted to the ICU in a critical condition. Naeem passed away shortly after.
Authorities from Ramna Police Station recovered CCTV footage from the hotel and hospital. Their forensic team, with CID support, inspected the scene, and the bodies were sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital's morgue. Inspector Ghulam Faruk confirmed all three became sick after consuming the hotel meal but stated that the precise cause of death could not be confirmed until after autopsies.
Hailing from Dehla village in Ramganj Upazila, Lakshmipur, Monir was a well-known businessman engaged in contracting, transportation, and property ownership in both Saudi Arabia and Bangladesh. His elder cousin, Shahjawat Hossain, recalled that Monir often returned home after Eid. “He was generous and cared for the poor—why would anyone wish him harm?” he asked, as family members voiced fears that the food might have been deliberately poisoned.
With the community shaken, relatives demand a thorough investigation to reveal whether this was a tragic accident or a sinister act.
