Dhaka, June 23 (V7N) — Power supply in parts of Dhaka began returning to normal late Sunday night, nearly two hours after a technical fault at a key grid substation caused widespread outages.

The disruption originated at a substation of Power Grid Bangladesh PLC (PGCB) located in Rampura, where an unexpected electrical malfunction occurred around 10:00 p.m., leaving a significant portion of the capital without electricity.

In a statement issued at 12:00 a.m., PGCB authorities confirmed that engineers had repaired the fault at the 230/132 kV Rampura Grid Substation by 11:45 p.m.. Power distribution companies were then instructed to begin restoring supply across affected areas in phases.

“The issue occurred at a PGCB substation in Rampura, which primarily impacted areas under the Dhaka Power Distribution Company (DPDC),” said Shamim Hasan, spokesperson for the Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB). “Areas under DESCO (Dhaka Electric Supply Company) were largely unaffected.”

PGCB, in an earlier alert, said that the technical fault developed at 9:50 p.m., causing an “unanticipated disruption” in electricity supply to parts of the capital. The grid operator’s engineers immediately began efforts to resolve the issue.

“Thanks to a rapid response, we managed to restore the grid within the shortest possible time,” said the PGCB statement. Full power restoration is expected to be completed gradually across all impacted zones.

While such localized grid faults are not uncommon, Sunday’s incident highlights the fragility of urban power infrastructure in high-demand areas like Dhaka, especially during peak summer months.
