Damascus, June 23 (V7N) — At least 20 people were killed in a suicide bombing at a church in the Syrian capital Damascus on Sunday, according to a report by AFP. The attack occurred during a religious service at a Greek Orthodox church in the Dweil’a neighborhood.
The Syrian Interior Ministry said the bombing was carried out by a member of the Islamic State (IS) militant group. Eyewitnesses reported that the attacker detonated an explosive device inside the church, causing extensive casualties and damage.
Emergency services responded quickly to the scene, with dozens of wounded transported to nearby hospitals. Security forces have since cordoned off the area and launched an investigation to determine whether other individuals were involved.
This marks one of the deadliest attacks in the capital since recent escalations in regional tensions, raising concerns about the resurgence of extremist violence in the country.
