Gazipur, Nov 03 (V7N)- Garment workers have blocked the Dhaka-Tangail highway in the Naojor area of Gazipur, bringing traffic to a standstill on Tuesday (November 3) and causing severe inconvenience to commuters.
Earlier in the morning, workers attempted to stage a blockade near the Palli Bidyut area of the same highway. Law enforcement personnel dispersed the protesters by firing sound grenades and tear gas shells.
Following the formation of a wage board and discussions involving the government, garment factory owners and labour leaders, workers at several factories have returned to their workplaces. However, unrest continues in some areas.
Meanwhile, security has been strengthened across key locations in Gazipur, Ashulia and Dhaka to prevent further violence. Eleven platoons of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) have been deployed in Gazipur, with personnel stationed at strategic points.
According to the Industrial Police, a general holiday has been declared for approximately 200 garment factories in Gazipur.
In connection with the recent violence in the industrial areas, three cases have been filed, naming around 4,000 people as accused. So far, 45 people have been arrested in connection with the incidents.
Authorities are maintaining heightened security as the situation remains tense, while commuters and workers continue to face disruptions across the industrial belt.
