Dhaka, Sep 21 (V7N)- A Dhaka court has granted a four-day remand for Satkhira-4 MP Gazi Nazrul Islam and a one-day remand for his first wife, Maksuda Begum, in a case filed over the alleged abetment of suicide of his second wife, Mariam Khatun.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Ehsanul Islam passed the order on Monday after police sought seven days' remand for both accused.
Police have arrested Gazi Nazrul and Maksuda in connection with the case filed by Mariam's father, SM Masum Billah. The case names three accused, including Mariam's maternal uncle Md Obaidur Rahman, who remains at large.
Mariam, 19, was found dead at a flat in NAM Bhaban in Dhaka's Sher-e-Bangla Nagar on Sunday evening. Police recovered her body from the residence and launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death.
Mariam's father filed the case alleging that his daughter had faced physical and mental abuse following her marriage to Gazi Nazrul and that the accused were responsible for abetting her suicide. These allegations will be examined during the investigation and court proceedings.
Police said an inquest had been conducted and the body was sent for autopsy as part of the investigation.
The case comes nearly two months after a video involving Gazi Nazrul and Mariam circulated on social media. Nazrul later acknowledged that Mariam was his second wife. He was subsequently expelled from Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami following an internal investigation.
Police have also taken procedural steps concerning Gazi Nazrul's status as a sitting MP, including communication with the Speaker of Parliament regarding his arrest.
Investigators are continuing to collect evidence and question those connected with the case. The third accused, Obaidur Rahman, has not yet been arrested.
