Barguna, Nov 23 (V7N) – Five candidates have purchased nominations from the National Citizens Party (NCP) to contest the 110-seat Barguna-2 constituency, which includes Patharghata, Bamna, and Betagi upazilas, in the upcoming 13th National Parliamentary Election. The candidates are A. Kaiyum Khan Sohag, Dr. Mahtab Uddin, Syed M. Naeem, Mo Bellal Hossain, and Md. Mahmudul Hasan.
The candidates are set to compete against heavyweight rivals, including BNP Vice Chairman Nurul Islam Moni and Jamaat-e-Islami central leader Dr. Sultan Ahmed, in the constituency. Among the NCP contenders, A. Kaiyum Khan Sohag has attracted the most attention. A young leader who gained prominence after the student uprising on August 5, Sohag is optimistic about securing victory as a representative of the rising youth movement.
Sohag holds a bachelor’s (honors) and master’s degree from Dhaka University, followed by an LLB. Professionally, he is engaged in law and is recognized locally as a social worker and humanitarian. He serves as secretary of the Prajak Foundation, a charitable organization, and is actively involved in community service in his area.
He also acts as an advisor to the Safe Roads Movement in Patharghata and plays a significant role in supporting educational initiatives, providing career guidance for students, and serving as a member of the governing body of Patharghata College. Known for his sharp intellect, persuasive reasoning, and amicable personality, Sohag previously participated in politics with the Islamic Chhatra Shibir, where he served as Human Development and Research Secretary at Dhaka University. He actively joined the street protests against fascism during the July student uprising in Dhaka. Currently, he serves as the chief coordinator for Patharghata upazila and a district organizer of Barguna for the NCP.
Another prominent candidate is Dr. Mahtab Uddin, who completed his Dakhil and Alim from the Madrasa Education Board and later earned an MBBS degree from Rajshahi Medical College. He is currently practicing as a sonologist, providing medical services in Barisal.
The five NCP candidates are expected to bring diverse backgrounds, combining youth activism, social service, and professional expertise, to challenge established political figures in the Barguna-2 constituency in the upcoming elections.
