Lakshmipur, July 3 (V7N) — BNP Joint Secretary General Shahid Uddin Chowdhury Annie has warned that adopting the proportional representation (PR) system for elections would create major divisions within the country and provide fascist forces with a greater opportunity to consolidate power.

Annie made these remarks on Thursday afternoon while speaking as the chief guest at a discussion meeting during the inspection of the BNP representative election in Dattapara Union, Lakshmipur Sadar Upazila. The event was held at the premises of Purba Saidpur Government Primary School.

Referring to BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman’s position on the matter, Annie said, “Many countries around the world conduct elections using the PR method. But in the context of Bangladesh, this is not feasible. If we adopt the PR method at this moment, it will create major divisions among ourselves.”

The event was attended by several local and district BNP leaders, including:

  • District BNP member Hafizur Rahman

  • Chandraganj Thana BNP convener M Belal Hossain

  • Thana BNP joint convener M Yusuf Bhuiyan

  • Md. Anwar Hossain Bachchu

  • Sohel Mahmud

  • Sharif Uddin Patwari

  • District Jubo Dal member secretary Abdul Alim Humayun

  • District Swechchhasebak Dal president Mohsin Kabir Swapan

  • District Krishak Dal president Mahbub Alam Mamun

  • District Krishak Dal general secretary Mostafizur Rahman Sohel

Annie urged party leaders and activists to remain united and vigilant against any moves that could undermine national unity or the democratic movement.
