RANGAMATI, March 1, (V7N) - The hill district of Rangamati has recorded a bumper yield of turmeric this season, with production estimated at 10,000 metric tons from 2,300 hectares of land. The market value of the harvest is around Tk 2 billion, according to the Department of Agricultural Extension.
Officials said the soil and climate of the hilly region are highly suitable for spice crops, making turmeric a profitable cash crop due to low costs, less labor, and high returns. Prices have surged this season, with dried turmeric selling at Tk 8,000–9,000 per maund, nearly double last year’s rate. Retail prices are around Tk 250 per kg.
Traders noted that turmeric from Rangamati is prized for its color, taste, and aroma, attracting wholesalers from Dhaka, Chittagong, and Comilla. Demand has risen further as imports declined amid the dollar crisis, boosting local farmers’ profits.
Deputy Director Md. Moniruzzaman said scientific cultivation could increase yields and reduce soil erosion. He added that expanding turmeric farming in hilly wastelands would reduce import dependence and strengthen the local economy.
Farmers and traders urged government and private initiatives to provide modern technology, improved seeds, and marketing facilities. The Agriculture Department has set a production target of 10,500 tons this year, with a potential market value of Tk 2 billion.
