Madaripur, Dec 10 (V7N) – A 35-year-old physician, Onik Ashcharya, died by suicide on Monday night while on a video call with his girlfriend in the Tekherhat Bazar area of Rajoir upazila. The incident occurred around 12:30 a.m. at his rented apartment on the third floor of the Noor Jahan Community Centre in Shimultala.
Onik, son of rural physician Anjan Ashcharya from Bajitpur village in Rajoir, had been working for the past eight years at City Hospital and Digital Diagnostic Center in the nearby Bridge No. 1 area, serving in the emergency department as a DMF doctor. For round-the-clock service to patients, he lived alone in a rented flat adjacent to his workplace.
According to family members, Onik had an argument with his girlfriend shortly before the incident. While still connected to her through a Messenger video call, he reportedly wrapped a rope around his neck and hanged himself from a ceiling fan. A neighbor named Nripan, who stayed in the adjoining room, sensed something was wrong and immediately informed the police.
Officers from Rajoir Police Station arrived at the scene, broke open the locked door, and recovered the body.
Rajoir Police Station Officer-in-Charge Sheikh Aminul Islam said the body has been sent to the morgue of Madaripur 250-bed District Hospital for autopsy. He added that legal action will be taken if a written complaint is filed by the family.
