Habiganj, Sept 22 (V7N) — Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has detained an employee of the Jamalganj Upazila Election Office in Sunamganj while he was allegedly attempting to cross illegally into India through a border area in Habiganj.
According to a press release issued by the Habiganj Battalion (55 BGB), the man was detained at around 6:30 a.m. on Sunday during an operation in the Monglambasti Tea Garden area near the Habiganj border.
BGB said the man was attempting to cross the zero line near Border Pillar No. 1939/M to enter India when he was detained.
The detainee was identified as Sushanta Chandra Biswas, 34, son of Satyendra Chandra Biswas of Sachail village in Tarail upazila of Kishoreganj.
Sushanta has reportedly been working on a contractual basis at an election office since 2016 and is currently employed as a data entry operator at the Jamalganj Upazila Election Office in Sunamganj.
BGB said officials at the election office confirmed that Sushanta had been absent from work without authorized leave for about a month.
During preliminary questioning, Sushanta reportedly told BGB that he travelled to Sreemangal on Thursday and stayed at a hotel. He later allegedly attempted to cross the border illegally into India with the assistance of a broker.
BGB said two Android mobile phones, Tk 12,185 in cash, two National Identity (NID) cards bearing his name, six other identification documents, an official office seal and personal belongings were recovered from his possession.
The recovered identification documents and other papers are being examined, according to BGB.
Lieutenant Colonel Tanzilur Rahman, commander of Habiganj Battalion (55 BGB), said BGB surveillance and operations along the border would continue to prevent illegal crossings and protect border security.
He said legal action was being taken against the detainee in accordance with the law.
