Pabna, July 13 (V7N) — Local residents and the bereaved family held a protest and human chain on Saturday morning demanding justice for Saadia, a young bride who was killed allegedly over unpaid dowry. The demonstration took place at Aktarer Dhal area in Dapunia, Sadar Upazila, organized by the victim’s family and community members.
Speakers at the event included Anarul Islam, Amirul Islam, Saidul Rahman, Saadia’s father Sohel Molla, mother Dolly Begum, and relative Josna Khatun. They condemned the failure of authorities to arrest the accused, Sabbir Hossain, despite his public presence. The protesters called for the immediate arrest and exemplary punishment of Sabbir.
According to family sources, Saadia Khatoon, daughter of expatriate Sohel Molla from Tikori village, married Sabbir Hossain, son of Salam Pramanik from neighboring Kajipara village, four years ago. Since marriage, Sabbir repeatedly demanded dowry and subjected Saadia to physical abuse. On June 26, after Saadia refused to pay further dowry, Sabbir reportedly beat her severely, resulting in her death. Sabbir then staged a drama by taking her to the hospital and fleeing the scene.
Following the incident, Sabbir and his family have been absconding. On July 5, Saadia’s mother Dolly Khatun filed a case at Pabna Sadar Police Station accusing Sabbir, his parents, and two brothers of abetting suicide under case number 8.
Pabna Sadar Police Officer-in-Charge (OC) Abdus Salam denied allegations of police inaction, stating that a special team has been formed and is actively working to apprehend the suspects.
