Khagrachari, June 21 (V7N) – The body of a missing village police member from Khagrachari’s Matiranga upazila has reportedly been found across the border in India’s Tripura state, according to his family members.

Md. Hanif Mia (45), a village police constable from the Tabalchhari Union under Matiranga upazila, had been missing since Thursday night. On Friday evening, a video began circulating on social media purportedly showing a dead body lying in Indian territory near the border. Hanif’s wife, Parvin Akhter, identified the body as that of her husband after seeing the video, though neither the cause of death nor how he ended up in India has been confirmed.

The incident has been acknowledged by Osman Ali, the Secretary of the Tabalchhari Union Parishad.

Besides his duties in the village police force, Hanif Mia was also engaged in farming to support his family.

Quoting Hanif’s wife, local sources reported that on Thursday night, two men—Belal and Helal Mia alias Helu—called Hanif out of his house. When he failed to return by morning, family members began searching for him. Later that day, they came across the video online and identified the body. However, local law enforcement agencies and the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) have yet to officially verify the identity of the deceased or the location of the body.

Multiple local sources allege that Belal and Helal are involved in cross-border smuggling. They have reportedly been implicated in past cases involving the illegal transportation of cattle, clothing, and other goods from India into Bangladesh.

When contacted at 10:30 PM Friday night, Khagrachari Deputy Commissioner A.B.M. Iftekharul Islam Khandaker confirmed that legal measures are underway regarding the missing village police officer. However, he stated that the BGB has not yet officially confirmed the discovery of the body in Indian territory.

This developing story raises serious concerns about cross-border crime and the safety of local law enforcement personnel working in remote border areas.
