PABNA, JUNE 07 (V7N) – Sohel Hasan Shahin, the former chairman of Pabna Sadar Upazila and general secretary of the Upazila Awami League, was detained by immigration police upon his return to Bangladesh at Dhaka's Shahjalal International Airport on Tuesday evening, June 3.

The detention was confirmed by Abdus Salam, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Pabna Sadar Police Station, citing information from the Immigration Police.

Shahin, son of Abdur Rashid of Baliahalot area in Pabna municipality, was elected Upazila Chairman in the local government elections last year. He had departed from Singapore for Dhaka at 2:50 PM on Tuesday, though details regarding his departure abroad were not immediately available.

OC Abdus Salam stated, "The immigration police arrested him in the evening after landing in Dhaka. Later, after verifying the information and interrogating him, they handed him over to the airport police station."

The police official further clarified that Shahin is implicated in two cases in Pabna, including a student murder case. While he was not initially named in the complaints, he was subsequently made an accused in both cases after investigation revealed his involvement. Shahin had reportedly been absconding since August 4 of last year. A team from Pabna police has departed to bring him to Pabna on Wednesday, June 4.

The cases in question stem from an incident on August 4 last year, when Abu Said Khan, former chairman of Bhandara Union in Sadar Upazila, and his associates allegedly opened fire on students during an anti-discrimination student movement at a traffic intersection in Pabna city. This incident resulted in the deaths of two students, Zahid and Niloy, and numerous injuries. Two separate cases were filed for murder and attempted murder of students, in which Shahin was later implicated during the investigation.
