Dhaka, Sep 17 (V7N)- Law Minister Md. Anisul Huq has said the Cyber Security Act will be amended in a way that protects freedom of expression while preventing the defamation of individuals.
He made the remarks on Thursday while responding to questions from journalists after an event marking US Constitution Day at the Dhaka University Senate Bhaban.
The minister said the proposed changes are still at the draft stage and that the law will be amended only after consultations with all relevant stakeholders.
Speaking earlier at the event about strengthening the Human Rights Commission, Anisul Huq said establishing constitutional rule and ensuring good governance are among the government's top priorities.
He also claimed that Bangladesh's International Crimes Tribunal has a judicial process more advanced than that of any other tribunal in the world.
According to the minister, the primary objective of the tribunal is to prosecute crimes against humanity rather than target any particular individual.
He further said action would be taken against those who seek to incite instability on social media by circulating photo-cards attributed to anonymous news outlets.
The minister's remarks came amid ongoing discussions over amendments to Bangladesh's cyber legislation and concerns surrounding freedom of expression and the regulation of online content. Previous reporting has also documented debate over the scope and potential misuse of the Cyber Security Act.
