Dhaka, Sep 15 (V7N)- State Minister for Local Government Mir Shahe Alam has claimed that the Election Commission (EC) announced a seven-phase schedule for the upcoming Union Parishad elections without prior consultation with the Ministry of Local Government.
He made the remarks on Tuesday morning (September 15) at the Secretariat while responding to questions about the EC’s plans for the local government elections.
Mir Shahe Alam said the EC is an independent institution and has the constitutional authority to conduct elections. However, he said the government was unaware of the schedule announced by the Commission for the seven-phase Union Parishad elections.
According to the State Minister, there had been no communication between the EC and the government regarding the schedule, either through official correspondence or other channels.
He further said that, under established practice, election dates are generally announced after discussions with the government, followed by preparatory meetings and meetings of relevant law-and-order committees.
The remarks come amid preparations for the next round of Union Parishad elections and discussions over coordination between the Election Commission and the government.
