Dhaka, July 30 (V7N)- Law Minister Md. Asaduzzaman has said the government will take note of the Human Rights Watch (HRW) report on the trial process of the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) and examine the issues raised in it.
He made the remarks while speaking to reporters after the signing ceremony of a memorandum of understanding on legal assistance at the Secretariat on Thursday (July 30) morning.
The minister said the government is not ignoring the report and will seriously consider any complaints made by the rights organization.
“We are not ignoring the issue. If they have made any complaint, we are taking it seriously and it will be looked into,” he said.
Regarding the presidential election, the Law Minister said the next session of Parliament is scheduled for September, which falls within the constitutional 90-day timeframe for electing a new president.
He said there is no constitutional requirement to convene a special parliamentary session solely for the presidential election. However, he added that the government could call a special session in August if it considers it necessary.
Speaking about former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, the minister said efforts to bring her back to Bangladesh through the existing extradition process are continuing under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
“It is up to her to decide through which process she will return to the country. Since she is a death-row convict, she will be arrested upon her return and legal procedures will be followed,” he said.
The Law Minister also said the government's legal aid team is providing legal assistance to model and actress Sligdha Chowdhury, who he said is a victim of torture.
