Barishal, Jul 10 (V7N)- Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapan has said that former President Ziaur Rahman founded the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) by breaking away from conventional politics, adding that this has enabled the party to remain ahead of other political parties.
He made the remarks while addressing the closing ceremony of a month-long tree plantation programme at Barishal University on Friday morning, organized to mark the 45th martyrdom anniversary of Ziaur Rahman.
Speaking as the chief guest, the minister said BNP was established on a different political philosophy, which he claimed distinguished it from other parties.
He also said that Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is following the ideals and path of his parents and urged party leaders and activists to continue social welfare activities alongside the government's development efforts.
The programme was organized by the Ziaur Rahman Foundation and included a discussion on the late president's contributions.
Following the discussion, Information Minister Zahir Uddin Swapan planted trees on the Barishal University campus as part of the commemorative tree plantation campaign.
