Dhaka, Jun 11 (V7N) – Finance Minister Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury is set to present the national budget for the 2026-27 fiscal year in the National Parliament on Thursday afternoon (June 11). This will be the first national budget of the BNP-led government headed by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.
The government has proposed a budget of approximately Tk 938,000 crore, aiming to address economic challenges while supporting growth, investment and employment generation.
Budget expenditure has increased significantly due to several factors, including the need to manage global economic risks, higher spending on subsidies and social safety net programs, rising interest payment obligations, and the implementation of recommendations under the proposed new salary structure for government employees.
While the budget places emphasis on economic recovery, investment expansion and job creation, one of its major challenges remains a projected deficit of around Tk 243,000 crore, the highest in the country's history.
The government has set a target of reducing inflation to 7.5 percent during the next fiscal year, while gross domestic product (GDP) growth is projected at 6.5 percent.
According to budget estimates, about 67 percent of total expenditure will be allocated to operating expenses. The remaining funds will be utilized for the Annual Development Programme (ADP), loans and advances, food-related expenditures and other development activities.
To finance the budget, the government will rely primarily on revenue collection through the National Board of Revenue (NBR). Additional funding will come from domestic borrowing, foreign loans and grants, and other sources of revenue.
The budget is expected to outline the government's economic priorities and policy direction for the coming fiscal year amid ongoing efforts to stabilize the economy and stimulate sustainable growth.
