Dhaka, Apr 17 (V7N) – The United States has granted Bangladesh a new 60-day exemption from sanctions on Russian energy imports, offering temporary relief to the country’s energy sector amid the ongoing global energy crisis.
According to sources from the Energy and Mineral Resources Division, the exemption came into effect on April 11 and will remain valid until June 9. The decision was formally communicated to Bangladesh’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs by the US State Department on the same day.
Officials say the waiver is expected to ease pressure on fuel supply and energy imports, allowing Bangladesh to continue transactions related to Russian crude oil and petroleum products without immediate sanctions risks.
Earlier, on March 12, the US Treasury Department had granted a 30-day waiver for similar transactions, which expired on April 11. The latest extension is seen as a continuation of that temporary relief mechanism.
Energy sector insiders believe the move will help Bangladesh manage supply stability in the short term, though uncertainties remain regarding long-term arrangements under evolving global sanctions policies.
