Dhaka, Mar 06 (V7N) – President Md. Shahabuddin has emphasized the importance of applying modern science and technology to develop diversified designs of jute products, highlighting the role of the “golden fiber” in strengthening Bangladesh’s economy.
He made the remarks while inaugurating the nine-day Jute and Multipurpose Jute Products Fair at the Osmani Memorial Auditorium on Friday (March 6), marking the celebration of National Jute Day.
Addressing the event, the President said that jute is not only an agricultural crop but also a major export-oriented product for the country. He stressed that greater priority should be given to modern research, innovation and diversified product designs to expand the global market for jute goods.
The President noted that creating employment opportunities is a top priority of the current government, adding that initiatives are underway to create jobs for around 10 million people nationwide.
He also highlighted several recent government measures aimed at supporting the agricultural sector. According to the President, the government made a significant decision to waive interest worth Tk 12,000 crore for farmers within 10 days of assuming office, providing immediate relief to the farming community.
In addition, the government plans to distribute Krishak Cards in phases starting from April 14. Through these cards, farmers will be able to obtain fertilizer, seeds, irrigation facilities and easy agricultural loans at fair prices.
The President further urged the country’s youth to take advantage of startup initiatives and the “Made in Bangladesh” brand to promote jute-based products in international markets.
It is noteworthy that National Jute Day has been observed across Bangladesh every year on March 6 since 2017 through various programs to highlight the importance of the sector. The theme of this year’s celebration is “Develop the Jute Industry, Create Employment.”
The government has undertaken various initiatives and events nationwide to mark the day and promote the revival of Bangladesh’s traditional golden fiber industry.
