Mongla, Feb 21 (V7N) — The government has announced plans to maximize the capacity of Mongla Port, the country’s second largest seaport, with a focus on modernizing infrastructure and boosting import-export activities in the southwestern region.
Development Plans
Minister for Road Transport, Railways, and Shipping Sheikh Rabiul Alam Robi said the government aims to make Mongla Port a central hub for trade by fully utilizing the potential of the region. He highlighted the importance of short- and long-term initiatives to turn the port into a modern, dynamic, and efficient seaport.
“The role of Mongla Port in the national economy is very important,” the Minister stated. “With necessary infrastructure improvements, it is possible to transform the port into a fully capable and successful seaport.”
Agreements and Management
Regarding agreements signed during the previous government, Sheikh Rabiul Alam Robi said they will be carefully reviewed. “If these agreements protect the national interest and are helpful, they will be reconsidered and kept effective,” he added.
The Minister also emphasized that radical changes in port management are planned within the next six months to ensure more efficient operations and oversight.
Strategic Importance
Currently, Mongla Port benefits from rail and waterway connectivity, but modernization is needed to fully harness its potential. The government’s initiatives are expected to enhance the port’s role in national trade and regional economic development, positioning it alongside other major ports in Bangladesh.
Officials noted that the development plan will include improving cargo handling, logistics facilities, and streamlined management practices to make Mongla Port a key driver of trade growth in the southwestern region.
