Sylhet, Jan 13 (V7N) — Leaders of the Bangladesh Expatriate Welfare Council have voiced serious concerns over the potential closure of the direct Manchester–Sylhet flight, emphasizing that the decision would create significant difficulties for the large Sylheti expatriate community in Northern England.
In an official statement, the organization noted that the direct route has long allowed expatriates in Northern England to travel quickly and conveniently to their homeland. Suspension of this route would force passengers to rely on transit flights through London or other cities, which are more time-consuming, costly, and physically demanding.
Council leaders expressed fears that commercial interests and one-sided considerations may have influenced the decision, resulting in the disenfranchisement of expatriates from the Sylhet region. The statement criticized the lack of consultation with the expatriate community regarding their genuine travel needs.
The council urged Biman Bangladesh Airlines, as the national flag carrier, to prioritize the welfare and travel convenience of expatriates. It suggested that the route could be maintained through alternative arrangements such as adjusting flight frequency, implementing seasonal schedules, or other operational solutions to keep the vital link active.
The statement further highlighted the significant contribution of expatriates to Bangladesh’s economy through remittances and called on the government to recognize their legitimate demands and ensure uninterrupted travel options.
In response to the potential suspension, the Bangladesh Expatriate Welfare Council (ICHKCH) North England branch has organized a protest meeting at the OBA Millennium Oldham Centre on January 13. The national council expressed full support for the event and encouraged all expatriate Bangladeshis to attend and show solidarity.
Council President Alhaj Abdul Bari and General Secretary Mostak Babul jointly expressed hope that both the government and Biman Bangladesh Airlines would take the matter seriously and implement immediate measures to keep the Manchester–Sylhet route operational.
