Dhaka, Nov 06 (V7N)- Attorney General Md. Asaduzzaman has said that democracy becomes meaningless without fair and impartial elections, comparing it to a “broken house of a landlord.”

He made the remark on Thursday (November 6) at the full bench of the Appellate Division, led by the Chief Justice, during the second day of hearing on the state’s appeal seeking restoration of the non-partisan caretaker government system.

During the proceedings, the Attorney General argued that any step incorporated into the Constitution to strengthen democracy would not contradict its basic structure. He further stated that the reasoning previously used by the Appellate Division to abolish the caretaker government was “purposeful and misleading.”

Earlier, on the first day of the hearing on Wednesday, Asaduzzaman told the court that the country’s electoral system and democracy have been destroyed following the abolition of the caretaker government system. He alleged that the system was scrapped “to give political advantage to the Awami League out of malice.”

The Attorney General, serving as the country’s top legal officer, emphasized that the caretaker government system should be reinstated in the greater interest of democracy.

Meanwhile, lawyers representing prominent citizens, including those affiliated with BNP, Jamaat-e-Islami, and Sujan, also placed their legal arguments in favor of restoring the caretaker government system.
