Dhaka, Oct 07 (V7N) – An investigation has been initiated to try the Awami League as a political party for alleged crimes against humanity. A designated investigation officer has already been appointed to conduct the probe, according to sources at the International Crimes Tribunal on Tuesday (October 7) morning.

Tribunal sources said the inquiry will cover allegations of disappearances, murders, and other crimes committed over the past 16 years, alongside examining the party’s organizational involvement. The tribunal began taking up such cases in July–August, marking a new phase in the accountability process.

Meanwhile, the third day of interrogation of the final witness in the separate crimes against humanity case against Sheikh Hasina and three others is also scheduled for today. The main investigation officer, Md. Alamgir, will be cross-examined by Sheikh Hasina’s defense team before the Tribunal-1, headed by Justice Golam Mortuza Majumder.

Earlier, Alamgir was questioned throughout the previous day. Responding to queries about witness Chowdhury Abdullah Al Mamun, he stated that Mamun testified voluntarily “in the interest of revealing the truth,” not under any pressure.

Alamgir further noted that in July, law enforcement agencies and government-affiliated armed groups reportedly used deadly weapons in more than 50 districts. A total of 54 witnesses have testified in the case over 25 working days, and closing arguments are set to begin once the final witness’s interrogation is complete.

The prosecution affirmed that no one involved in the July massacre will escape trial.
