Dhaka, Aug 22 (V7N) – Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus officially handed over the ownership deed of a three-katha residential plot in Purbachal to Mahir Sarowar Megh, son of slain journalist couple Sagar Sarowar and Meherun Runi, after years of administrative delay.
The deed handover took place on Thursday afternoon at the state guest house Jamuna, where Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus personally presented the land documents to Mahir Sarowar Megh.
Journalist Sagar Sarowar had originally applied for the plot in 2004 and was granted allotment in 2005. Despite paying the full amount in 2009, the family did not receive legal possession of the land due to prolonged administrative inaction under the previous Awami League-led government.
Currently, as legal heirs, the plot belongs to Sagar Sarowar’s mother, Saleha Monir, and his son, Mahir Sarowar Megh.
During the handover, Professor Yunus inquired about the status of the long-stalled investigation into the high-profile 2012 murder of Sagar and Runi. He noted, “Such prolonged delays in criminal investigations erode public confidence in the justice system and cause widespread frustration.”
He urged the concerned authorities to expedite the probe and deliver long-awaited justice.
Adviser for Housing and Public Works, Adilur Rahman Khan, who was also present, stated that according to recent updates from the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI), many crucial pieces of evidence were lost due to the investigation’s delay.
At the ceremony, Megh presented the Chief Adviser with a jersey and a bag that he had personally designed, as a gesture of appreciation.
Others present at the event included Advisers Chowdhury Rafiqul Abrar, Farida Akhter, and Syeda Rizwana Hasan, Rajuk Chairman Engineer Md. Riazul Islam, and Meherun Runi’s brother, Nowazesh Alam Roman.
The gesture marks a small but symbolic step toward closure for the family of the journalist couple, whose brutal killings remain unresolved more than a decade later.
