New Delhi, Oct 07 (V7N)- India has reiterated its position on Bangladesh's request for the extradition of ousted former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, saying the matter is primarily a legal issue.
Indian External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal made the remarks during the ministry's regular weekly briefing in New Delhi on Wednesday.
Asked about Sheikh Hasina's extradition, Jaiswal said India views extradition as primarily a legal matter and that several legal issues are involved.
“When it comes to extradition, it is primarily a legal matter and, as I have said before, there are various legal issues involved,” he said.
Jaiswal also said India's approach toward Bangladesh is focused on maintaining constructive, positive and forward-looking relations.
“Our approach to Bangladesh is to maintain constructive, positive and forward-looking relations,” he said, adding that this approach is currently guiding India's engagement with Bangladesh.
Bangladesh has previously sought the extradition of Sheikh Hasina, who has been living in India since leaving Bangladesh amid political upheaval.
India's latest comments indicate that New Delhi continues to view the extradition request through the framework of applicable legal procedures and considerations.
