Amman, Aug 30 (V7N) — Iran has claimed that it launched missile and drone strikes on two US military bases in Jordan in retaliation for a US attack on missile launch facilities on Iran’s Larak Island.
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) announced the strikes in a statement carried by Iranian news agencies on Sunday (August 30), according to Al Jazeera.
The IRGC said the operation, dubbed “Punishing the Aggressor,” targeted the King Hussein and Al Azraq military bases in Jordan.
According to the statement, the attacks damaged technical systems and areas used to store fighter aircraft at the bases. Iran also claimed that the strikes caused significant damage. However, there have been no confirmed reports of casualties at either base so far.
The IRGC said the strikes were carried out in response to the US attack on Larak Island and warned that Iran would launch a larger response if it came under further attack.
Earlier, a US official said American forces had attacked two missile-launch facilities on Larak Island, located in southern Iran. The official claimed that personnel from Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps were preparing to launch rockets and deploy sea mines toward the Strait of Hormuz from the facilities.
The US said the operation was intended to prevent attacks and the deployment of mines in the strategically important waterway.
The latest exchange marks the first major direct retaliation between Iran and the United States since fighting intensified in late July.
Meanwhile, tensions between Washington and Tehran continue to escalate over the Strait of Hormuz. The United States says oil shipments through the waterway are being protected by its military, while Iran maintains that the strait remains closed.
Washington has also continued to increase economic sanctions against Iran, while warning that it is prepared to use military force if necessary. Tehran, for its part, has repeatedly said it is prepared for a prolonged conflict.
